1)Nevada Matters: Early states often determine the presidential nominee: Kerry ‘04, Gore ‘00, Clinton ‘96, and Carter ’76, ’80 won the early states, and Dukakis ’88 and Mondale ’84 performed well. Nevada recently became an early state.
2)You Matter: African Americans could have a big impact because so few people participate in the caucuses. For example, only about 9,000 people participated in the 2004 Nevada caucuses, whereas Nevada has about 69,000 registered Black voters.
3) You Represent: For every one adult Black citizen in Nevada, there are 203 other adult African Americans who can’t participate as early and don’t enjoy the same influence (99.6% of African Americans don’t live in Nevada).
Caucusing differs from voting, but it is easy. Watch this 6 minute video to see how caucusing works. Find your caucus location by clicking here, and more info is at the Caucus Center.
